Air Tech Italy recently caught up with ewo’s Manuel Toni Streiter. ewo is a long time member of Air Tech Italy and famous for its energy saving floodlighting solutions. High time to catch up with South Tyrol based ewo.

Air Tech Italy: Can you introduce yourself and share with us a bit more information on your role and the company?

Manuel: Certainly! I am Manuel Toni Streiter, Sales Manager for the Middle East at ewo. I’m in charge of managing sales representatives and overseeing projects across the region. Many of them very fascinating, due to our company’s ability to deliver versatility unmatched by other suppliers.

We’ve completed close to 300 airport projects globally, from Sydney to Singapore but also in Dubai, Munich, and Los Angeles to name but a few. ewo is renowned for delivering cutting-edge lighting solutions, with every step—from design to final assembly—handled entirely in-house at our headquarters in South Tyrol. I work with our various teams to make sure the client always feels supported.

Air Tech Italy: Thank you for this short introduction, what is the core business of ewo?

Manuel: Imagine outdoor lighting systems with a fully customized light distribution adapted to its surroundings. At ewo, we always focus on fully realizing a customer’s dream, as a manufacturer this means that we end up combining multiple ways of distributing the light output. Adapting our solutions to fit to the customers’ end goal.

We design and manufacture advanced lighting systems for a wide range of outdoor spaces. Our work spans everything from urban environments – such as streets, parks, and architectural landmarks -to large-scale areas like airports, ports, stadiums, and sports fields. We specialize in luminaires or light fixtures that are not only reliable and energy-efficient but also highly customizable to meet specific project requirements. At ewo, we combine cutting-edge technology, aesthetic excellence, and a strong commitment to sustainability in every project we undertake. This relates not just to the materials, but also the ability to tailor multiple light distributions inside any luminaire head and, therefore, potentially deliver projects with fewer units, using less electricity.

Air Tech Italy:  ewo’s lighting solutions have been implemented at airports all over the world. Why do airports choose your brand and how does it differ from other brands on the market?

Manuel: There are quite a few reasons, and this is something we are proud of given how saturated the market is. Airports choose ewo for our proven ability to meet the demanding requirements of airport operations. Our products are renowned for their versatility, durability, high lumen output, and energy efficiency, making them ideal for large outdoor areas such as aprons, service roads, and staging zones. What truly sets us apart is our ‘Made in Italy’ quality, which blends engineering excellence with a keen sense of design. By controlling every step of the process – from concept to production – we ensure that each project is executed with precision and molded to the unique needs of our clients. The ability to tailor the light distribution within each luminaire head, combining a variety of lenses wherever needed, allows us to deliver more precision, reduce glare and deliver a full service often with fewer luminaires, which can offset any higher energy costs.

Air Tech Italy:  ewo manages all processes in house, from design to final production, why is this? What are the benefits?

Manuel: Doing everything in-house is something that we’ve done since our company’s inception when our founder worked as an ornamental blacksmith – it sort of mushroomed out from that, ever since we took the leap to outdoor lighting and we can truly say that the benefits are numerous. It allows us to maintain full control over the quality of our products and respond quickly to customer needs. It also reinforces the ‘Made in Italy’ label, which stands for craftsmanship, innovation, and quality. By managing the entire production process from concept to completion, we can ensure that our solutions are tailored to the specific requirements of each airport, offering flexibility and guaranteeing top performance. This approach also helps in reducing lead times and improving sustainability, as we can closely monitor every aspect of production.

Air Tech Italy:  What comes to mind if we talk about trends in lighting esp. related to airports, how do you see the future of airport lighting

Manuel: We can see quite a few trends emerging at the moment; the ‘green shoots’ of change that are shaping our industry. One of the biggest trends we see is the growing importance of sustainability and energy efficiency. Airports are increasingly looking for lighting systems that not only meet operational needs but also contribute to their environmental goals. LED technology has made huge strides in this area, we are seeing a move towards smart lighting systems that can adjust according to real-time needs, further optimizing energy consumption. In the future, I believe that airports will fully integrate lighting into a broader smart infrastructure, with data-driven control systems that enhance safety, efficiency, and passenger experience. Alongside our lens combinations and general optical prowess, our future offering will prove irresistible thanks to the big strides we are making in intelligent lighting with our smart lighting brand connexx.

Air Tech Italy:  Some last reflections?

Manuel: I do believe it’s important to emphasize that we guide our clients through every step of their project, from selecting the ideal luminaire to ensuring compliance with the appropriate standards and creating tailored lighting designs that meet their specific needs. Additionally, we provide complete documentation for installers, all at no extra cost. This approach not only enhances the overall project experience but also ensures seamless implementation and outstanding results.

Air Tech Italy: Many thanks Manuel, this is really a great proof of the spirit of Italian excellence.
